Lamgade sets new national record

KATHMANDU, Dec 3: Chandra Lamgade of Nepal Police Club set a new national record in women's javelin throw during an open selection for the South Asian Games that kicked off on Thursday at the Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwar.

She hauled 43.90 meter to eclipse previous record of Seema Kumari Tharu (43.70 meter) of Armed Police Force set some three months ago at Thai Open in Thailand.Meanwhile, Sima Kumari failed to achieve her personal best and got contended in second position with haul of 40.24 meter.

Sita Shahi of Tribhuvan Army Club stood third with a 35.27 meter throw.

Army athletes took top two positions in men's javelin throw with Dhirendra Jung Shah throwing 58.85 meter and Ram Bahadur Kumal 54.22 meter. Narendra Jung Shah of Police earned third place honors at 51.76 meter.

Army athletes--Prem Singh (1.85 meter) and Surya Khatri (1.85 meter)--earned top two positions in men's long jump. Prem, however, was declared winner on the basis of better jump in his previous leap. Chaudhary duos Shila and Prabha of APF earned first and third positions in women's high jump. Shila leaped 1.51 meter and Prabha 1.45 meter. Barsha Bhattarai of Police came second with 1.48 meter jump.

Women's 5000 m race saw Bishwa Rupa Budha (18 minute 04.9 second) of Army, Santoshi Shrestha (18 minute 54.2 second) of Kathmandu and Sanu Maya Karki of Army (19 minute 12.9 second) earn top three finish, respectively. Men's same event saw Hari Kumar Rimal (15 minute 15.93 second) and Lal Bahadur Thapa (15 minute 31.34 second) of Army secure first and third place finish. Gopi Chandra Parki of APF stood second clocking 15 minute 16.28 second.

In men's 100 meter sprint Yam Sajan Sunar (10.6 second) of APF edged past Aashis Chaudhary (10.9 second) of same departmental team. Min Bahadur Chaudhary of Tribhuvan Army Club came third clocking 11.1 second. Women's same event saw Saraswait Chaudhary of APF earn pole position with a timing of 12.5 second. Krishna Chaudhary (12.6 second) of Army and Manamati Bista (12.9 second) of Police finished second and third.

Army athletes swept the top three positions in men's 800 m sprint. Som Kumal (1 minute 56 second), Mukti Bahadur Khadka (1 minute 56.9 second) and Jeevan Chaudhary (1 minute 58.1 second) secured top three positions. Women's 800 meter sprint saw Saraswati Bhattarai (2 minute 15.5 second) of Army, Fulmati Rana (2 minute 23.6 second) of APF and Laxmi Pandey (2 minute 30.8 second) finish in top three spots respectively.

The three day selection tournament shall pick 22 players--11 male and 11 female athletes--for the upcoming SAG.
