Single women here argued that instead of providing scholarships and free health and employment facilities to the children of single women, the government has insulted them.
"We have been additionally pained by the announcement," said rights worker and Kaski chairperson of Single Women´s Group Durga Neupane.
"The announcement has tagged a price on women," Neupane said. "Marriage is not an end to the sufferings of single women," she added.
Neupane demanded that instead of such announcement, the government should distribute ration cards to single women, apart from identity cards to travel at concession rates, and provide scholarships to their children.
The single women have also demanded employment compatible to their competence. "The announcement is an attempt to make women dependent on someone instead of empowering them," Neupane said.
They have also expressed anger that parliamentarians who are also single women did not object to the announcement. "If the parliamentarians who are single women want to marry for money, we will give them Rs 200,000," Neupane said.
The women picketed the District Administration Office for an hour before handing over a memorandum to Chief District Officer Madhav Prasad Ojha objecting to the government´s announcement.
