KATHMANDU, May 31: European Union (EU) has expressed disappointment over the dissolution of Constituent Assembly (CA) without promulgating a new constitution.

In a press statement issued by the Embassy of Denmark on behalf of the EU missions together with Norway and Switzerland on Thursday, the EU has also expressed concern over looming political uncertainty.[break]

“We express our disappointment over the failure of the political parties to agree on a new constitution, which resulted in the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly on 27 May. We are concerned by the possibility of prolonged political uncertainty and the effect this could have on Nepal´s socio-economic development,” read the statement.

The EU has also asked political parties to build consensus on the way forward, preserve the achievements of the past four years and find a solution to the legal problems at hand which would be acceptable to all and in the best interest of the country.

“We believe that respect of fundamental democratic principle is essential to guarantee that the aspiration of Nepal´s citizens for peace, stability, and prosperity is met,” the statement further said.

The EU has reaffirmed its continuing support to the efforts by the political parties to find ways and build necessary trust to conclude the peace agreement they reached in 2006, and deliver a democratic and inclusive constitution.
