Anil Thakur, director general of DoC, said 10 shops in Chabahil and Shantinagar of Baneshwar were raided on suspicions of hoarding of daily commodities. “We seized 150 kg of sugar that was found hoarded at a shop in Chabahil,” said Thakur.
Officials from DoC have been monitoring outlets of essential commodities in a bid to ensure smooth supplies and effectively enforce the mandatory provision to display price lists at the outlets. The government has already expressed commitment to smoothen supplies of essential commodities at cheaper prices for the relief of general public during festive seasons.
Union-mgmt row shuts Fire and Ice
KATHMANDU, Sept 13: Thamel-based pizzeria Fire and Ice has shut been down due to row between the trade union and management for last ten days. The agitating workers have demanded reinstatement of an employee, who was dismissed last week "after attending union´s monthly meeting."
The worker´s union -- affiliated to the trade union of UCPN (Maoist) -- comprises of cleaners, waiters, kitchen staff and chef working at the pizzeria."Just because she attended the union´s meeting does not give the right for the management to fire her," one of the workers told myrepublica.com. The striking workers accused management of shutting down the Italian food joint when they asked them to reinstate the fired employee.
Obstructions posed by the trade unions are not new in the already deteriorated hospitality and business industry. At least two international conglomerates were forced to close recently due to trade union dispute.
"We had given a week´s deadline for the management to come for talks," the worker said on condition of anonymity. "I hope the talks would find a logical conclusion." The union has already sent a letter to the Labor Ministry and other concerned offices regarding the shutdown of the restaurant.
Fire and Ice, famous amongst Kathmandu urbanites and expat community for past fifteen years, has one of the best pay scale in town.
