Dr Bhampa Rai, chairman of the Bhutanese Refugee Representative Repatriation Committee, said refugees were disappointed due to the failure of the successive government to give a momentum to the refugees´ movement for repatriation, but would like to welcome the fresh promise from the Nepal government to make effort for their repatriation.
“Hundreds of refugees are at the receiving end of political instability. Now we would also make a decisive effort,” he said.
President of the joint front of the refugees -- National Front for Democracy -- Balaram Poudel said it is satisfactory that the Nepal government is showing concern over the plight of the refugees.
While mentioning that Nepal government alone cannot resolve the problem of refugees, he said, “For the lasting solution to this problem, a high-level taskforce should be formed.”
Similarly, another refugees’ body also welcomed the policy and programs. Spokesperson for National Democratic Front, Bhutan, Narad Adhikari said repatriation is their main demand. “Nepal, India and Bhutan can jointly get to the bottom of the refugee problem.”
Around 100,000 Bhutanese refugees have been residing in seven camps in the two districts since 18 years. Among them, about 15,000 have already been resettled in third countries.
