KATHMANDU, Aug 16: Several parts of Nepal, including the Kathmandu valley, are still experiencing mild aftershocks over three months after the massive earthquake of April 25.
A tremor of 3.8 magnitude with its epicenter in Kathmandu was felt on Sunday afternoon. Nepal Seismological Center (NSC) reported that the tremor occurred at 3: 40 PM and the epicenter was reported near Kuleshwor area.It was the third perceptible aftershock in a week in Kathmandu with epicenters inside the valley.
On August 11, valley residents were jolted by a tremor measuring 4.3 in Richter scale. Two days later, on August 13, another aftershock of 4.0 magnitude rocked the valley.
Assistant professor and lecturer at Department of Geology of the Tribhuwan University, Subodh Dhakal explained the phenomenon of ongoing aftershocks as the activation of fault lines in Kathmandu valley.
According to Dhakal, there are around 4-5 fault lines in Kathmandu that were created by the previous earthquakes.
"These fault lines were passive before the recent massive earthquake. They had remained dormant for decades until the massive earthquake of April 25 that created ruptures at various places," said Dhakal.
Dhakal claims that few of the fault lines in Kathmandu passes from Kaushaltar area and the region that lies between Kirtipur and Thankot.
