KATHMANDU, June 24: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced a budget of Rs 18.95 billion for the fiscal year 2021/22.

Deputy Mayor of the KMC Hari Prabha Khadgi on Thursday announced the budget with a theme to promote the metropolitan as a cultural city. Of the earmarked expenditure, the KMC will be spending Rs 3.75 billion in the recurrent expenditure while Rs 10.80 billion has been allocated for the infrastructure development, Rs 2.70 billion for social development and Rs 550 million for the promotion of economic sectors.

The KMC is giving continuity to its ambitious ‘Mayor Lighting Program.’ It launched the program in 2018/19, allocating huge funds to install street lamps in all streets in the metropolis. However, there has been a little progress in this regard so far.

Control and prevention of COVID-19 and treatment of those infected with this virus,  building at least one public toilet, a model school and a public park  in each ward of the metropolis and plan to avail health and other necessary services to senior citizens are among the targeted programs introduced by the KMC for the next fiscal year.

The Constitution has mandated the local governments to announce their budget on June 24 (Asadh 10) every year. The budget was unveiled as a part of the same constitutional obligations.
