Nepal tops medal chart in Taekwondo Championship

ITAHARI, Jan 3: Nepal has clinched the International Open Friendship Taekwondo Championship on Tuesday winning 57 golds, 42 silvers and 52 bronze medals played at the Covered Hall of Itahari Stadium. 

Maitri Taekwondo Dojang bagged 11 golds, eight silvers and 11 bronze medals, while Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) won 10 golds, six silvers and 12 bronze medals. Likewise, in the tournament organized with the international regulation, Armed Police Force (APF) bagged eight golds, five silvers and three bronze medals, while Chunikhel-based team won seven gold medals, three silvers, and three bronze medals.  

Jhapa won three gold and three silver medals along with four bronzes, while Ilam bagged two silver and five bronze medals. Similarly, Chitwan got seven golds, eight silvers and seven bronze medals, while Dharan registered seven golds, four silvers, and a bronze medal. Morang’s side won three-three golds and silver medals, while they also got six bronze medals. 

The United States claimed second place bagging four golds, three silvers, and a bronze medal. Players from 12 countries participated in the tournament. Bangladesh came third in the medals tally claiming four golds, two silvers, and three bronze medals. 

India’s Abhishek Yadav was declared the best men’s player of the tournament, while Nepal’s Dikshya Thakuri became the best women’s player. They got Rs 50,000 each. 

The tournament, which was established in Portland, US, saw the first edition of the championship held in Kathmandu, second in Pokhara, and third in Kathmandu.
