KATHMANDU, May 31:  A writ petition has been lodged at the Supreme Court (SC), challenging the directive issued by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

Rabindra Paudel, Akash Kumar Bhatta, Pramesh Paudel, Ujjwal Mali, Imamul Haque, and Raju Pariyar filed the petition on Friday, against the decision to deploy traffic rule violators as volunteers on the roads.

On May 30, Home Minister Lamichhane, instructed subordinate agencies to recruit individuals who breach traffic regulations on the roads as volunteers.

The writ petition has been registered at the SC seeking an interim order to halt such work immediately.

The petitioners claim that even minor mistakes result in drivers being forced to stand on the roadside and regulate traffic, seriously affecting the rights and interests of all drivers.

“The actions undertaken by law enforcement agencies undermine the rule of law and contravene the principles of natural justice and fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution,” the petition reads.
