Grandfather Stories #1
“When we were children, we used to play Dandibiyo. It was a lot of fun then. We used to swim in this pond here at Thaiba. There was a lot of water that came all the way from Sunakothi through a water canal (raj kulo). Ohhh…it was fun those days. We used to pull the Rato Machhendranath chariot during the Jatra. I was a traveler too. I travelled from east to west in Nepal. When you travel you get to see a lot of new things that you don’t see when you live in the same place for long. You need to explore life,” said Shyam Maharjan, 70, from Thaiba, Lalitpur. He served at the Rastriya Banijya Bank as a driver for 25 years. He has two sons and a daughter, and he is a grandfather now. “Now that I am old, I wake up at 6 every morning, go to the temple and worship. I have some chitchat with my friends who are also old like me. We eat, laugh and I live what is called life,” added Maharjan.
