Pregnant women succumbs to coal smoke injury in Jumla

JUMLA, July 23: In a village at Patarasi-6 of Jumla, a pregnant woman died of suffocation after lighting a fire before going to sleep.

The 22-year-old Mayalakshmi Maharata, who had given birth 11 days ago, succumbed to the smoke from the coal burnt in the fire. 

She was living in Kalekholi in the district headquarters after getting married to a man from Patasari-4. Maharata was gravely injured due to suffocation and died during treatment at the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences, as confirmed by Dr Bishwa Shrestha. 

The infant has been admitted to the NICU and is receiving treatment. Chedilal Kamti, chief of the District Police Office of Jumla, stated that Maharata died shortly after being brought to the hospital.

It was reported that the fire was lit to keep the woman warm since she had just given birth. The police found evidence of the smoke's effect around the house when they arrived, indicating that the fire had caused the suffocation. 

The incident came to light on Monday morning when relatives broke the door down after receiving no response from inside.
