To promote and preserve Mithila art, Mithila Yain Art Gallery -- Thamel --hosted a painting exhibition this Saturday. The four-day long exhibition has the artworks of 18 artists from India and Nepal on display.

Shyam Sundar Yadav, the curator of the exhibition, highlighted the fact that Mithila art was fading slowly, and the exhibition was an effort to preserve the dying art. Yadav also added, “Maithili artists do not have access to exhibit their art in a bigger platform. So, the gallery provided them with an opportunity to showcase their talents.”

Altogether 26 paintings of 13 artists from Siraha, Janakpur, and Mahotari from Nepal, and five from Madhubani, India, are also displayed in the exhibition. Despite the similarity in presentation styles, between the arts of the two countries, their motifs and techniques are different. While the Indian artists emphasize religion, Nepali paintings portray the compassion of women.

The exhibition is slated to continue till Wednesday.
