From the time of the inception of the term artificial intelligence in 1956 by John McCarthy, technologies have evolved into a new avenue. There have been major highlights along the way of advancement.

1997: Super Computer defeats World Champion

IBM built supercomputer Deep Blue defeated the world chess champion Garry Kasparov.  The defeat of a human chess prodigy prompted two opinions: while some deemed this to be a significant development in the AI world, others just took it as a machine that followed rules.

2002: First home robot

US company iRobot created its first robot vacuum cleaner Roomba that was suited for use at home. Roomba’s in-built sensor helped it find its way through the floor and clean it.

2005: Robots in War

The American company Boston Dynamics introduced BigDog, a four-legged robot designed to transport weapons for the battlefield that were not feasible for normal vehicles to navigate. Furthermore, iRobot also created a bomb disposal robot, PackBot which were later deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2008: Speech recognition

In 2008, the feature of voice search was added to BlackBerry Pearl version of Google Maps and iPhone by Google. Compared to other AI developments, this was a fairly accurate development.
