KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Inner Wheel Club of Balaju organized ‘Empowering Women through Self-Defense against Abuse’ – a self-defense program aiming to empower women -- at the premises of Yellow Pagoda Hotel, Kantipath on Saturday. The program saw a participation of different dignitaries including the national representative of Inner Club -- Kamal Prava Kharel, president of Inner Wheel Club Balaju -- Gita Shrestha Rajbhandari, and sociologist and self-defense excerpt -- Giri Bahadur Sunar, among others.

The inauguration program was followed by a training session by Giri Bahadur Sunar. The training session was divided into five parts. Participants were taught to defend themselves through several techniques, including awareness, verbal, false surrender, legal and physical techniques. The course played an important role to aware people about the harassment that could happen at home, public places and vehicles, social media, gatherings, and other places.

Speaking at event, Kharel said, “I got to learn a lot about self-defense by the training provided by Giri Bahadur Sunar. I am really happy to be the part of the show.” Kharel also talked about the numerous cases of women abuse reported throughout Nepal.

Talking about the social stigma and her experiences of sexual abuse, social worker and child psychologist, Kanchan Rawat, said, “There is a huge responsibility of the society, family and the education system. We belong to a society where females are objectified. Most of the rape cases are seen to be associated with alcohol consumption. So, it’s time to be conscious; the government should either ban alcohol or make license mandatory for alcohol shops.”
