Delta Mart fire estimated to have caused loss of property worth Rs 500 million

KATHMANDU, June 21: The fire that broke out on Thursday evening at Delta Mart in Milan Chowk, Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City-8, has caused an estimated property damage of around Rs 500 million.

According to the owner of the Mart, the assessment of the loss is being assessed now, but the initial estimate suggests that the fire has caused damage worth over Rs 500 million. The owner stated that although the fire was brought under control by 2AM, all the goods and the building were completely destroyed.

The fire started at 6:30PM from the west side of the Delta Education Mart on the fourth floor of a four-storied building constructed of metal structure and was extinguished after eight hours. 

The Om Complex housed stationery items, over two dozen ready-made school uniforms, raw and ready-made clothes, Nepali garments, and a shoe market with sports equipment, all of which were in operation.

Bijaya Raj Pandit, Chief Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the Area Police Office in Butwal, reported that all operational goods in the shop were damaged. According to Pandit, while the fire was prevented from spreading to the nearby motor garage, two petrol pumps, and the densely populated surrounding area, the Delta Mart itself was completely destroyed.

Efforts to control the fire involved firefighting units from Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City, Devdaha, Sainamaina, Sidhharthanagar, Lumbini Culture Municipality, Barghat and Parasi of Nawalparasi, Banganga of Kapilvastu, Nepal Oil Corporation, Bhalwari, Gautam Buddha International Airport, and 13 fire engines.
