Young man from endangered Raute Community dies of tuberculosis

SURKHET, Sept 19: A 22-year-old man from the endangered Raute community, Brish Bahadur Shahi, died of tuberculosis on Wednesday. The deceased, from Guras Rural Municipality-1 in Dailekh, had been ill for six months and died en route to his village.

He was receiving treatment at the Provincial Hospital in Surkhet. In the final stages, doctors diagnosed Brish with advanced tuberculosis. The hospital announced that due to severe internal problems, treatment was no longer possible and advised his family to take him home.

After falling ill, he was not taken to the hospital immediately and was only brought in at a critical stage. Despite the efforts, Brish could not be saved, according to Lal Bahadur Khatri, a teacher close to the Raute community.

With Brish's death, the Raute population has now decreased to 134.

The Raute community currently resides in Simesal, Guras Rural Municipality-1 in Dailekh.

The Raute community’s population has been declining annually due to their diet. In recent years, with government-provided allowances, many Rautes, both young and old, have fallen into alcoholism. This has led to a higher mortality rate compared to the birth rate.
