Public awareness against cyber crimes increasing in Nepal (With video)

KATHMANDU, May 3: As the users of social media are increasing, awareness against the cybercrimes is also getting on its track.

According to the Metro Police Crime Division, six hundred 57 cases of dishonor through the social media have been registered in current fiscal year, among which the division has filed the case under Cyber Crime and Public Offence act against nine people.

According to the division, the cases of the dishonor, extortion through e-mail and SMS, website hacking, anti-social websites and copyrights among others are registered in the division. Among them, the cases of dishonor through social media like facebook and twitter are in the higher number.

“In most of the cases, we release the offenders after being assured that would not be repeated again. But we have filed the cases against nine offenders under Cyber Crime and Public Offence act”, said DSP Pashupati Ray of the division.

Eight hundred 30 cases related with social medias were registered during the last fiscal year 2015/2016, among which, 17 cases were filed under Cyber Crime and Public Offence act. Four cases of hacking and one case of copyright were registered. In fiscal year 2014/2015, 12 cases were filed under Cyber Crime and Public Offence act out of three hundred nine registered cases.

 Metropolitan Police Division has developed the system to monitor triannual cybercrimes.

“In comparison to rest parts of the country, most of the cases have been registered within the valley. The cases outside the capital are being registered through CIB. Metropolitan Police Division monitors the cases within the valley”, said DSP Ray.

As per the act, the offender could face three years of sentence or penalty of Rs 200,000 or both.

Mostly, extortion through e-mails, use of fake social account in abusing and SMS threat among others are cybercrimes that are found in Nepal.
