Kidney patients demand free-of-cost peritoneal dialysis

KATHMANDU, Nov 19: An umbrella organization of kidney patients submitted a memorandum to the prime minister as well as the secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population on Monday, demanding free-of-cost peritoneal dialysis.

“We organized a rally and submitted a memorandum to the PM’s personnel secretary and secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population,” said chairperson of the Kidney Victims Concerned Society Nepal, Balaram Subedi.

Despite the government’s decision in 2016 to provide free dialysis for those suffering from chronic kidney problem, the patients are forced to pay Rs 22 from their own pockets while purchasing a packet of medicine for peritoneal dialysis. 

Since May 2016, the government has been providing free hemodialysis and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) services to kidney patients. 

CAPD, a portable type of dialysis, uses manual packets of peritoneal dialysis fluid that goes into the belly and collects excess water and waste, which is drained into another bag. Patients can undergo this dialysis by themselves at home.

Chairperson Subedi warned that they would announce more agitation programs if their demands are not met.
