JSP’s Saroj Yadav is Madhesh CM

JANAKPURDHAM, Jan 11: Saroj Yadav of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) has been appointed as the chief minister (CM) of Madhesh Province.

JSP's Yadav was appointed as the CM of Madhesh Province today by Province Chief Hari Shankar Mishra.

After Yadav submitted his claim for the post of CM to the province chief today with the support of 63 province assembly members, the province chief appointed him as the CM.

Including 16 province assembly members of JSP, 23 of CPN-UML, 13 of Janamat Party, seven of Maoist Center, one Rastriya Prajatantra Party, one of Nepal Federal Socialist and two independent members. He is supported by Nepali Congress, CPN United Socialist Party and all other parties except Loktantrik Samajwadi Party. Yadav, who was elected to the provincial assembly from Bara 1, is the outgoing speaker of the province.

According to the agreement between the top leaders of the power-sharing parties at the center, JSP and Janamat Party will take turns to lead the government in Madhesh Province. Yadav submitted his claim with the support of 63 members, as there are 107 members in the provincial assembly and the support of at least 54 members is required for a majority. The Supreme Court has barred the swearing-in of two proportional members from the Maoist Center.

Madhesh Province Chief Hari Shankar Mishra called for submission of claims before 4 PM on Thursday, 12th of January to appoint the chief minister of the province. Earlier, Province Chief Mishra had made a call  for the appointment of the chief minister of the province as per Article 168 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal as no single party had a clear majority in the provincial assembly.
