The United States spends more on its military than the rest of Nato combined. Last year, the alliance spent a total of $918 billion and the US accounted for $664 billion of that total. Nato states have committed to spending 2 percent of their GDP on defense by 2024 but so far, only the US, Greece, Poland and Estonia have reached that target. In 2016, military spending accounted for 3.6 percent of
US GDP compared to 1.2 percent for Germany.
