KATHMANDU, Oct 18:  By nature, humans are nomadic beings who prefer not to remain in one place continuously. With globalization, the world is gradually transforming into a global village. In such a scenario, individuals are less inclined to be confined by the borders of their own country. Marrying and divorcing are common occurrences, especially when relationships don't work out. In Nepal, people are generally aware of the legal processes involved.

So, what does Nepali law stipulate when it comes to the marriage and divorce of Nepali citizens abroad? Does Nepal recognize such events, and if so, under what circumstances? It's important to be acquainted with the rules and regulations established by the Nepali law in these matters. Marriages and divorces conducted by Nepali citizens abroad are indeed acknowledged in Nepal. It is permissible to marry either a Nepali citizen or a foreigner while residing abroad. However, the eligibility and conditions for marriage, such as age, consent, and marital status, should adhere to the laws of Nepal.

The procedures for overseas marriages, such as marriage registration and obtaining a marriage certificate, must also comply with the laws of the respective country where the marriage is taking place. While marrying at a Nepali embassy or consular office in another country, the marriage procedures must align with the Nepali law.

These are the conditions under which foreign marriages are recognized in Nepal. In the case of a divorce, Nepali citizens residing abroad can legally dissolve a marriage with a foreign citizen or another Nepali citizen, provided that the divorce is conducted in accordance with the laws of the respective country. Such a divorce, in compliance with the laws of the foreign country, is also recognized in Nepal.
