Ganga Maya seeks justice with UN Resident Coordinator

• Ganga Maya said that it was impossible to get justice in Nepal as the judiciary is filled with political appointments made by the ruling party. 

KATHMANDU, Feb 5: As part of her efforts to internationalize her struggle for justice, Ganga Maya Adhikari held a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator to Nepal, Valerie Julliand, at the UN House in Lalitpur on Tuesday. 

Ganga Maya lost her husband in course of staging hunger strike demanding action against those involved in the murder of her son, Krishna Prasad during the Maoist insurgency. 

During her meeting with Julliand, Ganga Maya said that the government is unwilling and unable to deliver justice to her for her son’s murder.  “I want to remind humankind and the international community of their responsibility to act for justice,” she said.

Ganga Maya said that it was impossible to get justice in Nepal as the judiciary is also filled with political appointments made by the ruling party and that they need to internationalize the issue to get justice. 

She also sought the support of the United Nations to internalize the issue to get justice. 

Ganga Maya also shared her intention to continue her fast-unto-death as long as justice is not delivered to her. “If there is no help from the UN, I will start fast-unto-death and die for justice. I will not stop my fast-unto-death just because someone asks me to stop it,” advocate Om Prakash Aryal quoted Ganga Maya as saying. 

A group of lawyers including Aryal, Dinesh Tripathi, Indra Prasad Aryal, Badri Prasad Bhusal, Charan Prasain, Bikash Basnet and a conflict victim Sabitri Shrestha had facilitated and accompanied her in the meeting with the UNRC Julliand on Tuesday. 

After her meeting with Ganga Maya, UNRC Julliand told reporters that Nepal’s transitional justice process needs to be revised in a bid to provide justice to the conflict victims. 

“Nepal, being a member of the UN, should respect human rights and provide justice to the conflict victims,” she said.

Julliand tweeted that the struggle of Ganga Maya was a source of inspiration to all those seeking justice and truth. 

“I received Ganga Maya Adhikari at the UN House this morning upon her request. Her courage & determination are a source of inspiration for those seeking justice and truth. Every victim has the right to remedy and they should not have to wait endlessly,” she wrote on Twitter after the meeting.
