Firms fined Rs 300,000 for overcharging on salt

KATHMANDU, July 11: The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has imposed a fine of Rs 300,000 each on two firms for selling iodized salts for more than the maximum retail price and other food items with expired shelf-life. 

The Department said that Macro Minimart located in Soltimod-13 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has been selling iodized salt from Salt Trading Corporation at more than the maximum retail price on the other hand, Mega Mart Pvt Ltd located in Tahachal has been found selling expired food products. 

Meanwhile, the Department has requested all entrepreneurs not to sell the salt produced by Salt Trading at more than the determined price. The Department has stated that selling goods at a price higher than the prescribed price is illegal and strict action will be taken against businessmen involved in such fraudulent activities. 

The entrepreneurs are reminded that they may face a fine of Rs 200,000 to Rs 300,000 for selling expired food items or at prices above the set limit, as per the Consumer Protection Act of 2075 BS.
