Federal Probation and Parole Board recommends placing 179 prisoners on parole

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: A meeting of the Federal Probation and Parole Board has recommended to the concerned district courts to place 179 prisoners on parole.

At a press conference organized by the Office of the Attorney General on Tuesday, Attorney General Ramesh Badal said that the meeting of the Federal Parole Board has decided to recommend placing 179 prisoners on parole to the concerned district courts.

The decision made by the board is submitted to the district courts through the Department of Prison Management, and once approved by the courts, the prisoners are released from jail and required to follow certain behavioral guidelines as per legal provisions.

"Individuals who have served two-thirds of their sentences with good behavior and conduct can be released on parole," said Attorney General Ramesh Badal. "Those who have been granted parole have not violated the guidelines. One person admitted to moving from one district to another as their own mistake, but others have not breached the rules of parole."

According to the Criminal Offense (Sentencing and Execution) Act, 2017, prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment, convicted of corruption, rape, acid attacks, human trafficking, organized crime, money laundering, and those punished for torture or cruel and inhumane treatment are not eligible for parole.

Attorney General Badal stated that, including the recent decision for 179 prisoners, a total of 814 inmates have already been granted parole. He also mentioned that studies have shown that those released on parole have adhered to the discipline of parole.
