Courts across the country to remain closed today

KATHMANDU, Jan 23: The Supreme Court has decided to close courts across the country on Sunday to mourn the death of former Chief Justice Mohan Prasad Sharma. Expressing grief over Sharma's demise, the Supreme Court has decided to grant mourning leave to all courts across the country.

Former Chief Justice Sharma, who was born in Kamalpokhari, Kathmandu on Poush 1, 1991 BS, had entered the government service in 2016 BS. He was appointed as the Chief Justice in Chaitra 2054 BS and remained in the office till Mangsir 30, 2056 BS. Sharma died last Wednesday.

However, his final rituals were carried out on Saturday as his family members arrived late in Kathmandu from abroad. Only after the funeral, an emergency full court meeting was held in the Supreme Court and it decided to give mourning leave. The country has lost its true judicial personality and has suffered irreparable damage in the field of justice and law, according to a statement issued by the Supreme Court.

"An emergency meeting of the apex court has decided that the apex court, high, district, special and other courts across the country will remain closed on Sunday, January 23 to mourn the untimely demise of former chief justice Mohan Prasad Sharma," the apex court said in the notice.
