Citizenship Bill follows basic provisions of Constitution: Minister Khand

Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand has said that the government presented the Citizenship Bill in parliament as per the spirit of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015.

Responding to the queries raised by lawmakers during the theoretical discussions on the Bill to Amend the Nepal Citizenship Act-2006 in parliament session on Friday, Minister Khand said the Bill aimed to end a situation to leave people stateless and to enable non-Nepali citizens to obtain the citizenship certificates through foul means.

"No Nepali citizen shall be denied the right to acquire citizenship," is the main spirit of the Constitution and the Bill aims to serve the same spirit. 

He said that the government is committed to facilitating the citizens to exercise their constitutional rights to citizenship and the Bill was introduced on the same grounds. "The Constitution is changeable and it requires following a defined process and a system. With changing time, the Constitution will become a further advanced document," he said. 

Minister Khand argued that the government had presented the Bill keeping in view of a large number of Nepali nationals who are facing multiple inconveniences in the absence of the state's recognition for long.
