KATHMANDU, Sept 5: Hundreds of Nepalis migrate on a daily basis, looking for opportunities abroad particularly in the Middle-East, South East Asia and India.

The flow of migrants has increased as a result of economic imperatives and a continued lack of reliable job opportunities at home. Migrants have very little bargaining power and are vulnerable to exploitation by labor agencies and foreign companies. As a result, illegal trafficking and rampant human rights abuses are common.

Accountability Lab - Citizen HelpDesks has recently carried out a survey around migration accountability in four of the most earthquake affected districts of Nepal over the past three months.

From the survey, it discovered that many of the worst problems related to migration stem from a lack of information about the process, weak policies to hold labor agencies accountable and limited government capacity to respond to migration-related challenges.

The primary purpose of the survey, Citizen Help Desks says, is to gather and communicate the voices and opinions of the migrant community and synthesize their feedback in an organized way so that the government, civil society and media can work to ensure a more humane, safe and accountable migration process for Nepalis.

Citizen HelpDesks hope that this survey result makes people more literate on the migration crisis of Nepal. Meanwhile, it allows us to perform our work more efficiently and effectively ensuring a more humane, safe and accountable migration process for work-immigrants in Nepal.
