Birgunj customs office collects Rs 12.16 billion in revenue in first month of current FY

BIRGUNJ, Aug 20: Birgunj Customs Office, which is known as the main customs checkpoint of the country, has collected Rs 12.16 billion in revenue in the Nepali month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August), the first month of the current Fiscal Year (FY).

The customs office had set a revenue target of Rs 16.86 billion for Shrawan. However, the office could meet only 72.11 percent of the target.

Raghu Lal Karn, information officer of Birgunj Customs Office, said that revenue collection in the first month of the current fiscal year was encouraging. He said, “Shrawan is not considered as a month with significant foreign trade. The revenue collection of over Rs 12 billion in the first month is considered as encouraging.”

The Department of Customs has set a revenue collection target of Rs 15.62 billion for the Birgunj Customs Office in Shrawan of the last fiscal year. During the same year, the office collected 75.96 percent of the target, amounting to Rs 11.87 billion.

In the first month of the current fiscal year, goods worth Rs 46.59 billion were imported through the Birgunj customs point, marking a 3.53 percent decrease compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.

In the month of Shrawan of the fiscal year 2023/24, goods worth Rs 48.29 billion were imported through this customs office. However, the amount of domestic goods exported through this customs office has increased in the first month of the current fiscal year. In the first month of the current fiscal year, domestic goods worth Rs 2.67 billion were exported.

In the month of Shrawan of the fiscal year 2023/24 goods worth Rs 2.47 billion were exported. Compared to the previous fiscal year, the exports through this border point have increased by 7.16 percent in Shrawan of the current fiscal year. The share of imports stood at 95 percent while the share of exports stood at five percent.
